Driving Instructor Trainee Licence

A Driving Instructor Trainee Licence is an option that can be used as part of the qualification process in becoming a Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency Appoved Driving Instructor, DVSA ADI

To be eligible to use a Trainee Licence, a prospective driving instructor must fulfil these conditions:

• Must have passed DVSA ADI Part 1 within the last 2 years
• Must have passed DVSA ADI Part 2
• Must have had a minimum of 40 hours training from a DVSA ADI in giving driving instruction
• Must be eligible to take DVSA ADI Part 3
• Must work with a driving instructor or driving school; a trainee licence holder is not allowed to work independently

There are also conditions to fulfil for the duration of the trainee licence:

• The trainee must continue to work with a driving instructor or driving school; a trainee licence holder is not allowed to work independently
• The trainee must choose an option to receive either:
  • Supervision by an ADI of 20% of all driving lessons the trainee driving instructor delivers
  • Ongoing training; a minimum of 20 hours in the first 3 months, or before attempting the DVSA ADI Part 3 Test
    • An additional 5 hours of ongoing training before each subsequent DVSA ADI Part 3 attempt

A Trainee Licence has a duration of 6 months, a second trainee licence is not usually issued, unless there are extenuating circumstances.
